Gogyo-no-Kata
Takano Sasaburo, the main instructor for kendo at Tokyo Higher Normal School, created a straightforward method for teaching and learning kendo techniques known as ‘Gogyo-no-Kata’. This set of kata is made up of five techniques with the tachi and three using the kodachi. The techniques are solemn and powerful, but seem to flow, being ‘soft’ on the outside and ‘hard’ at the core. The Tokyo Higher Normal School later became the Tokyo University of Education, and is now the University of Tsukuba. The ‘Gogyo-no-Kata’ are still practiced by students at the University of Tsukuba to this day.
